This week! To not miss…DuChamp, Biblo, Nika Son, a noise parade, Mushy… by DuChamp

Wed Jan 9th @ Loophole, Boddinstrasse 60 NK

NIKA SON + BIBLO + DUCHAMP w/FILIPE DIAS DE

NIKA SON makes music with fieldrecordings, voice, analog and electronic instruments. Her music is composed of manipulated field-recordings, combined with instrumental fragments and sparse vocals. Playing live, her tracks are stretched and extended, using a groove box, varying instruments and contact-microphones. Sounds coming from somewhere deep down, circling, spinning and hovering between dark blue, red and grey. Some of her tracks have been released on compilations on m.mlabel, Alrealon Music and Wir rufen zurück (Demo-Dandies). As a DJ (Nikae) she plays records on a regular basis, mainly at the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg, where she hosts, together with Ratkat, a monthly music and exhibition night.

BIBLO Istanbul based artist Biblo, has been creating music out of everyday noises, field recordings and lazy, confused pieces of beats for a while now. Her record “On Ugliness” was released in a limited edition of 200 pieces as the first ever record on Quetzi Records (a-musik/Cologne) in May 2010 and her latest album ’Projection’ isreleased in April 2012 through her bandcamp.

DUCHAMP  is an Italian scientist, musician and curator based in Berlin, religiously devoted to drone. She’s mainly inspired by the sound of the hairdryer, drone superheroines such as CC Hennix, Eliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros, a long series of dronester lovers and by the lack of God. Her debut album will be release on vynil in January for Boring Machines (IT).

FILIPE DIAS DE  is a founding-member of Altes Finanzamt, musician and writer. After graduating in economics in Lisbon, moved to Asia (i.e. India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia) where he lived from 2006 till 2008. There he learnt sitar (Indian classical music), various Gamelan instruments (Balinese music) and Gender Wayang (Balinese xylophone used for shadow puppetry). After moving to Berlin (mid 2008), Filipe started exploring sitar in the context of experimental improvised music, developing new melodic constructions and also using objects.

Mario de Vega – born in Mexico City, 1979 his work overlaps relations between stability, failure, simulation and ambiguity with site-specific interventions, sound events, process-oriented projects, sculpture, modified electronics and sound improvisation. As an improviser, his practice explores the value of fragility & in-determination involving a wide range of customized objects, analog and modified electronics, turntables and computer based interfaces in different combinations.
http://www.mariodevega.info/

Jeff Surak – operates in the netherworld between composed and improvised music, moving between musique concrete, drone, noise, & free improvisation using whatever sound implements at hand. He has collaborated with such artists as Alexei Borisov, Zan Hoffman, Rinus Van Alebeek, Frans De Waard, and Michael Gendreau.

In 2006, Programmer, writer, performer and explorer Martin Howse co-founded xxxxx, organising one large-scale conference and concert series in London (xxxxx) and publishing the acclaimed xxxxx [reader].
Heavily improvised, playing with the collapse of massed, barely functional salvaged equipment and software systems made manifest in sound/noise and image, Howse presents a complex, process-driven constructivist performance; the symphonic rise of the attempt to piece together fugal systematics is played out against the noise of collapse and machine crash at the deserted border of control.

Scott Sinclair
 – is an audiovisual artist, performer, and programmer. Largely self-taught, and with no allegiance to any single scene, he usually creates work that involves harsh and humorous collages of different media, from computer music and video art to vocal improvisation and custom-made costumes. Sinclair has a long history in improvised music, and is known for his brutal and unpredictable performances mixing more ‘serious’ and ‘difficult’ elements with ‘low brow’ trash, which has found audiences strangely entertained on many tours in Europe, Australia, Japan, Russia, and North America.

Marta Zapparoli – Sound artist, performer, musician, studied fine arts and the soproano saxophone. In Bologna/Italy being involved in a series of experimental radio shows, multmedia performances, sound installations and various dance companies and aswell experimental multimedia theater events. The last decade she creates sound art using field recordings digital and custom analog tools as well as found instruments and objects. Her sonic work investigates environmental phenomena, acoustic ecology, noise pollution, focusing on sonic narratives & human emotions through decomposition and real-time manipulation, sounds that are considered non-musical or overheard.

Musician, performer and founder of Idiosyncratics Records, Yannick Franck has developed an increasingly personal style that combines sharp acoustic research and abrasive walls of sound. Often described as trance-inducing, his music is based on the treatment of sources such as instruments and non-musical objects, voice, radio signals and field recordings. It ranges from fundamental acoustic explorations (The Staircase Continuum) to more stylistic-expressionistic searches (Memorabilia); two fields of investigation that tend to collide in his latest works. In the past, Yannick Franck has collaborated with Pietro Riparbelli / K11, Craig Hilton (Gauchiste, Loincloth), Phil Maggi, Alan Trench (World Serpent, Temple Music, Orchis) and Esther Venrooy among others and his music has been released on several labels including Silken Tofu, Young Girls Records, Sylvain Chauveau’s concept record house Onement and Italian label Silentes.

Topmodel  was Magnus Schaefer and Rinus van Alebeek on various keyboards and Mireia Guzman who made up spontaneous songs in spanish, german, english and gibberish. To some blind listeners their music reminded them of Malaria or the early Tödliche Doris. In the last years of the first decade of the new century, they were Momus’ preferred supporting act. After Magnus Schaefer`s decision to leave the group, topmodel continued, but mainly spend their time looking at a glass of milk. Now they are back. With a brand new idea. Tarot – Singing!

Mushy + Black Tar Jesus

MUSHY Italian artist directly from the underground experimental scene. Started in 2003. She’s got a double sided synth-wave slash kraut-psychedelic soul. Her sound reveals a charming world, made by the mixture of analog drum-machine loops, burgeoning cold drones, tempestuous noises and spectral chants which rise at the surface.

Oneida´s drummer Kid Millions live in West Germany as Man Forever! by DuChamp

Kid Millions live in West Germany, Xberg, 19-10-12 at 21

MAN FOREVER is Kid Millions´solo project. He´s a Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and writer who is perhaps best known as the drummer for Oneida. Man Forever, his vehicle for exploring the outer limits of drum performance, was created to overwhelm, to investigate the nuances that bloom in the midst of repetitive music, and to act as a pure sound experience.
Originally based on the idea of creating a sort of punk-infused Metal Machine Music for drums, Man Forever has evolved from a five or six full drum set ensemble to something a lot more stripped down. Based on two drummers playing single stroke rolls on a single drum and the patterns that emerge from that, Pansophical Cataract is propulsive without a pulse. Patterns evolve and burst through the static surface of the material, much of which was produced by electric instruments, though “Ur Eternity” remains mostly drums with only a few bass tracks making an appearance. The sounds created by these instruments were based on the drones that Colpitts hears when he is practicing (the not fully conscious singing or humming that arises when one practices alone), and then augmented and enhanced by the other musicians on the record. The repetitive rolls create a phasing effect, a music in and of itself, and the dynamic shifts that occur when the other instruments enter become not mere notes, but grand events. In the live environment, these shifts and phasing effects, are amplified through sheer volume and duration. “Surface Patterns” and “Ur Eternity” are 30 and 40 minutes respectively (though have been shortened to around 18 minutes per side on record), creating an even more dramatic effect. Pansophical Cataract can be likened to watching Niagara Falls. You can’t expect to see every drop of water that crests over the ridge, but you are overwhelmed with the shear scale of the thing, and therein lies the aspiration for this record. Dive right in.

Upcoming this week, part 1 by DuChamp

Upcoming this week…with the bigger problem of Berlin, lack of ubiquity. Too many nice things, so make your choice…

[#]Mo Sept 10

Iku Sakan/Supermelle(JP/DK)  and Tasos Stamou (GR/UK) at Experimontag (Madame Claude)

IKU SAKAN & SUPERMELLE (Sun Horogram Music/JP,DK)
Iku Sakan is a experimental sound performer, improvisor and DJ from Osaka, Japan currently based in Berlin, Germany. Since 2009, he has been performed all over the world including important festivals in Europe as a member of several bands, such as ATP in the UK (with Maher Shalal Hash Baz) and Avantgard Festival in Germany. His music is a sort of weaving exercise, looking to find “soulful moments from soulless materials.” Iku explores music as ‘Myth-Science’ by combining computer processing, prepared recordings with a range of sounding objects (such as mini-massager, measure & oscillator).

http://soundcloud.com/ikusakan

Anders Lauge Meldgaard is the real name of the man behind Supermelle aka Frisk Frugt. He is coming out of the experimental music collective yoyooyoy based in Berlin and Copenhagen. Frisk Frugt (eng. Fresh Fruit) operates in his own quirky musical universe, where the genre of traditional Danish folk song writing and poetry in an unpretentious way are spiced up with elements from experimental rock, improvisation, drone, noise, electronica, lo-fi, free jazz and African high-life guitar. Here, the music arises at the intersection between the programmed and the hand played, and between the naive and the complex – where the sonorous clouds of tones from home-built instruments, brutal guitarriffs, synthdreams and saxophone improvisations are mixed together.

TASOS STAMOU (Electronics & Visual/GR,UK)
Tasos Stamou is a currently UK based performer of free improvised music and an electroacoustic composer. He has been collaborating with various experimental musicians and collectives (the London Improvisers Orchestra, Adam Bohman, Adachi Tomomi, Nikos Veliotis etc). His audiovisual project “Videodrones” consists of a handmade live electronics modular system which incorporates circuit bent musical toys and self-modified video mixers.

Will Guthrie, Rashad Becker  and Luciano Maggiore at West Germany (Xberg)
Australian drummer/percussionist Will Guthrie uses amplified found and junk, microphones, electronics, drums and cymbals. He works in many different settings of music: live performance, improvisation and studio composition. He studied jazz and improvised music(s) at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia and alongside Ren Walters he started the weekly concert series ‘Improvised Tuesdays’, now known as the Make It Up Club and is Australia’s longest running performance space dedicated to
experimental and improvised musics. In Nantes, France he is part of the collective CABLE# which also organises regular concerts and an annual festival. He also runs the experimental improvised CD label and mailorder service; ANTBOY MUSIC. He plays solo using different combinations of drums, percussion, amplification and electronics, in minimalist/maximalist free jazz trio THE AMES ROOM, in appalachian mutant folk duo ELWOOD & GUTHRIE, as well as the electro/acoustic improvised/composed ensemble
Rashad Becker is a shadowy figure. He describes his music as “playing the music of notional species”.
Luciano Maggiore (Palermo 1980) is an electroacoustic musician living and working in Bologna. In recent years he has developed a strong interest in the mechanisms of sound diffusion, utilizing speakers and various analog and digital media (walkmans, CD players, tape recorders) as his primary source. Maggiore’s interests runs between architectural values and directional, dynamic and psychoacoustic sound, placing a strong emphasis towards fixed sound. He works regularly as a duo with Enrico Malatesta and Francesco Brasini. He has collaborated with Angstarbeiter, Auriga, Mario De Vega, John Duncan, Andrew L. Hooker, Seiji Morimoto, Seijiro Murayama, Valdoca Theatre, Zapruder Filmmakergroup, Zimmerfrei. His work is published by Senufo Editions and Boring Machines.

[#] SILVER APPLES, BLACK DICE AND MV/EE in FESTSAAL XBERG

Decades after their brief yet influential career first ground to a sudden and mysterious halt, the Silver Apples remain one of pop music’s true enigmas: a surreal, almost unprecedented duo, their music explored interstellar drones and hums, pulsing rhythms and electronically-generated melodies years before similar ideas were adopted in the work of acolytes ranging from Suicide to Spacemen 3 to Laika.

For over fifteen years, the highly influential Black Dice have continuously reinvented and mutated punk music into new sonic stews. The New York based trio of Eric Copeland, Bjorn Copeland, and Aaron Warren have released scores of albums, EPs, and singles on iconic labels (Gravity, 31g,Troubleman, DFA, Paw Tracks), that document their musical travels, from raw brutal thrash to inside-out pop anthems from way out.

MV&EE
w/ the Home Comfort Sound System: A spectral sound cinema show from the visionary American free-folk duo

The Home Comfort Sound System is built to MV&EE’s spec by sound engineer Tall of Suffolk’s Ambush Cinema and combines with 16mm projections, slides, oils, and customised lighting devised by Hogge of Bristol’s infamous Cube Cinema. Together they plan to reconfigure and retune each space with specially dreamt up environments channelling MV&EE’s homespun aesthetic. Good time front porch vibes, heavy acoustics and zero gravity jams blend with moving image, moonshine and local ales in this untethered and other-worldly a/v show.

a) CARLA BOZULICH’S EVANGELISTA (Live) | B/B/S/ (Live)
Kantine am Berghain | 12.09.2012 | at 21, ticket around 14 eu..
Carla Bozulich´s  Evangelista is known as one of the most vivd figures of the international avant-garde and NoWave scene whose musical incarnations are almost endless. She has worked with Mike Watt, Lydia Lunch, Bulbul, Willie Nelson or Sonic Youth, and has, since August 2009, when she, together with Marianne Faithfull and Marc Ribot in an concert for the opening of the Ruhr Triennale. With “In Animal Tongue”, a new album that lives mainly on the interplay of depression, melancholia and breaking through to anger. Carla Bozulich bathes once more formally in authenticity and emotion. Thematically, the album deals with her departure from Los Angeles and their nomadic existence in recent years. On the album there are many guests, with which it has taken the road truly fantastic collaborations. The core of her band currently consists of Sam Mickens (The Dead Science), Shahzad Ismaily (Laurie Anderson, Secret Chiefs, Sam Amidon) and John Eichenseer (jhno).

Open the evening B/B/S/. Founded in 2012 in Berlin and consisting of guitarist Aidan Baker (Nadja, Whisper Room, ARC), the Italian drummer Andrea Belfi (David Grubbs, Hobocombo, Il Sogno del Marinaio) and Norwegian guitar player Erik Skodvin (Svarte Greiner, Deaf Center) B/B/S/ mostly present improvised music: psychedelic sounds meet here on reduced fragments of melody and experimental drone textures.
