Danish songwriter Jacob Faurholt has released four solo albums between 2005 – 2012, the latest Dark Hours, was released in Germany through Raw Onion Records in July. Dark Hours was well received and the English site Drowned In Sound wrote the following: “Jacob Faurholt instantly transports the listener to the sort of gothic Americana hinterland that has been populated by the likes of Will Oldham and Sparklehorse.” Faurholt moved to Berlin in 2010, and has since played more than 50 shows in Germany. He has also played support jobs for Grizzly Bear, The Black Heart Procession, The Handsome Family, and fellow danes Efterklang. Faurholt is also active with his psych pop band Crystal Shipsss.

[#] Thu 17 Jan @ NK, Elsenstr. 52 Berlin Treptow,  a concert to be not missed!

BORN OF SIX: AMELIA CUNI / CATHERINE CHRISTER HENNIX / WERNER DURAND / STEFAN TIEDJE

Amelia Cuni – solo voice
Catherine Christer Hennix – drone voice
Werner Durand – invented wind instruments, drones
with Stefan Tiedje – sound

BORN OF SIX comes out of the traditions of Dhrupad, Early Minimalism and Just Intonation.

„A solid foundation is the best basis for the fundamental“

Narada´s Exposition of the seven notes begins as follows: Because sadja (the Tonic) arises from the combination of nose, throat, chest, palate, tongue, and teeth, it is known as „six-born“.

Catherine Christer Hennix, born 1948 in Stockholm, is an artist, poet, composer, and philosopher with a strong interest in logic, the foundations of mathematics, and formal music theory. Hennix began her musical studies in the 1960s, paying particular attention to the music of Iannis Xenakis and Karlheinz Stockhausen. She pursued studies with Hindustani raga master Pandit Pran Nath in the 1970 and has been a key protagonist in the Manhattan Downtown School along with La Monte Young and Henry Flynt, with whom she shared a number of collaborations that led both to coin the term HESE (“Hallucinogenic Ecstatic Sound Environment”) to aptly describe their scientifically systematic quest for ecstatic states of consciousness.

Amelia Cuni is a singer, composer and performer. She has trained her voice and musical skills in India, according to the tradition of DHRUPAD singing and KATHAK dance. Her present work includes contemporary music and multimedia collaborations with several artists of international repute. She is engaged in the transmission of the knowledge she has acquired from her gurus and teaches Indian singing at the Vicenza Conservatory in Italy. She is based in Berlin.

Werner Durand  performs his own music for saxophones, iranian ney, and self-made wind instruments since the late seventies. He studied with Ariel Kalma in Paris, Indian classical music in India and Berlin (with Kamalesh Maitra) and Iranian ney with Ali Reza Asgharia. He started to build wind instruments out of plexi-glass and PVC in the early 80s, which led to the foundation of THE THIRTEENTH TRIBE in 1990.

This week! To not miss…DuChamp, Biblo, Nika Son, a noise parade, Mushy… by DuChamp

Wed Jan 9th @ Loophole, Boddinstrasse 60 NK

NIKA SON + BIBLO + DUCHAMP w/FILIPE DIAS DE

NIKA SON makes music with fieldrecordings, voice, analog and electronic instruments. Her music is composed of manipulated field-recordings, combined with instrumental fragments and sparse vocals. Playing live, her tracks are stretched and extended, using a groove box, varying instruments and contact-microphones. Sounds coming from somewhere deep down, circling, spinning and hovering between dark blue, red and grey. Some of her tracks have been released on compilations on m.mlabel, Alrealon Music and Wir rufen zurück (Demo-Dandies). As a DJ (Nikae) she plays records on a regular basis, mainly at the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg, where she hosts, together with Ratkat, a monthly music and exhibition night.

https://soundcloud.com/nikacis

BIBLO Istanbul based artist Biblo, has been creating music out of everyday noises, field recordings and lazy, confused pieces of beats for a while now. Her record “On Ugliness” was released in a limited edition of 200 pieces as the first ever record on Quetzi Records (a-musik/Cologne) in May 2010 and her latest album ’Projection’ isreleased in April 2012 through her bandcamp.

https://soundcloud.com/biblo

DUCHAMP  is an Italian scientist, musician and curator based in Berlin, religiously devoted to drone. She’s mainly inspired by the sound of the hairdryer, drone superheroines such as CC Hennix, Eliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros, a long series of dronester lovers and by the lack of God. Her debut album will be release on vynil in January for Boring Machines (IT).

FILIPE DIAS DE  is a founding-member of Altes Finanzamt, musician and writer. After graduating in economics in Lisbon, moved to Asia (i.e. India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia) where he lived from 2006 till 2008. There he learnt sitar (Indian classical music), various Gamelan instruments (Balinese music) and Gender Wayang (Balinese xylophone used for shadow puppetry). After moving to Berlin (mid 2008), Filipe started exploring sitar in the context of experimental improvised music, developing new melodic constructions and also using objects.

Thu Jan 10, @ West Germany, Skatlizer strasse Xberg

jeff surak (US)
mario de vega (DE/MX)
yannick franck (BE)
frgmnt (DE)
marta zapparoli (IT)
scott sinclair (AUS)
martin howse & martin kuentz (UK/DE)
topmodel (DE)

Mario de Vega - born in Mexico City, 1979 his work overlaps relations between stability, failure, simulation and ambiguity with site-specific interventions, sound events, process-oriented projects, sculpture, modified electronics and sound improvisation. As an improviser, his practice explores the value of fragility & in-determination involving a wide range of customized objects, analog and modified electronics, turntables and computer based interfaces in different combinations.
http://www.mariodevega.info/

Jeff Surak - operates in the netherworld between composed and improvised music, moving between musique concrete, drone, noise, & free improvisation using whatever sound implements at hand. He has collaborated with such artists as Alexei Borisov, Zan Hoffman, Rinus Van Alebeek, Frans De Waard, and Michael Gendreau.

In 2006, Programmer, writer, performer and explorer Martin Howse co-founded xxxxx, organising one large-scale conference and concert series in London (xxxxx) and publishing the acclaimed xxxxx [reader].
Heavily improvised, playing with the collapse of massed, barely functional salvaged equipment and software systems made manifest in sound/noise and image, Howse presents a complex, process-driven constructivist performance; the symphonic rise of the attempt to piece together fugal systematics is played out against the noise of collapse and machine crash at the deserted border of control.
http://1010.co.uk/org/

Scott Sinclair
 - is an audiovisual artist, performer, and programmer. Largely self-taught, and with no allegiance to any single scene, he usually creates work that involves harsh and humorous collages of different media, from computer music and video art to vocal improvisation and custom-made costumes. Sinclair has a long history in improvised music, and is known for his brutal and unpredictable performances mixing more ‘serious’ and ‘difficult’ elements with ‘low brow’ trash, which has found audiences strangely entertained on many tours in Europe, Australia, Japan, Russia, and North America.
http://soundcloud.com/halftheory/lloyd-honeybrook-and-scott-sinclair-live-in-melbourne

Marta Zapparoli - Sound artist, performer, musician, studied fine arts and the soproano saxophone. In Bologna/Italy being involved in a series of experimental radio shows, multmedia performances, sound installations and various dance companies and aswell experimental multimedia theater events. The last decade she creates sound art using field recordings digital and custom analog tools as well as found instruments and objects. Her sonic work investigates environmental phenomena, acoustic ecology, noise pollution, focusing on sonic narratives & human emotions through decomposition and real-time manipulation, sounds that are considered non-musical or overheard.
https://soundcloud.com/martazapparoli

Musician, performer and founder of Idiosyncratics Records, Yannick Franck has developed an increasingly personal style that combines sharp acoustic research and abrasive walls of sound. Often described as trance-inducing, his music is based on the treatment of sources such as instruments and non-musical objects, voice, radio signals and field recordings. It ranges from fundamental acoustic explorations (The Staircase Continuum) to more stylistic-expressionistic searches (Memorabilia); two fields of investigation that tend to collide in his latest works. In the past, Yannick Franck has collaborated with Pietro Riparbelli / K11, Craig Hilton (Gauchiste, Loincloth), Phil Maggi, Alan Trench (World Serpent, Temple Music, Orchis) and Esther Venrooy among others and his music has been released on several labels including Silken Tofu, Young Girls Records, Sylvain Chauveau’s concept record house Onement and Italian label Silentes.
http://yannickfranckchronicles.blogspot.it/

Topmodel  - was Magnus Schaefer and Rinus van Alebeek on various keyboards and Mireia Guzman who made up spontaneous songs in spanish, german, english and gibberish. To some blind listeners their music reminded them of Malaria or the early Tödliche Doris. In the last years of the first decade of the new century, they were Momus’ preferred supporting act. After Magnus Schaefer`s decision to leave the group, topmodel continued, but mainly spend their time looking at a glass of milk. Now they are back. With a brand new idea. Tarot – Singing!

Mushy + Black Tar Jesus

MUSHY Italian artist directly from the underground experimental scene. Started in 2003. She’s got a double sided synth-wave slash kraut-psychedelic soul. Her sound reveals a charming world, made by the mixture of analog drum-machine loops, burgeoning cold drones, tempestuous noises and spectral chants which rise at the surface.

C O N C E R N live in Berlin! 08-11-12 by DuChamp

Liebig12 in collaboration with PAN presents:

ZAIMPH /// CONCERN /// TRICOLI/WARWICK/KOULIGAS

performances start 8pm *** be on time *** ! Liebigstrasse 12 F´Hain

CONCERN is Gordon Wilson Ashworth, the man behind the legendary Oscillating Innards, member of Knelt Rote and proprietor of Iatrogenesis Records (and DuChamp favorite artist). Using only acoustic sources and field recordings, Concern creates massive, emotionally-resonant drone pieces magnified by the fragility of magnetic tape.

http://soundcloud.com/concern

Zaïmph is the solo project of ambient noise artist Marcia Bassett. Although legendary for white-hot guitar and vocal brutality, Zaimph’s recent recordings and performances infuse cracked-raga song structures with dense electronic and synthesizer drones to create soundscapes where a lurking apocalypse is eclipsed by shimmering, meditative beauty. As a co-founder of Philadelphia’s shambolic psychonauts un and tectonic drone pioneers Double Leopards, Bassett is deeply entwined with the American noise underground, and has mapped regions still only dimly understood by subsequent sonic travelers. From 2003-2008, Bassett joined Matthew Bower in Hototogisu, where her mastery of cacophonous eardrum shred achieved monolithic proportions. During the same period, she explored American underground psychedelic folk-improv music with Steve Gunn and Pete Nolan in GHQ, and with Tom Carter in Zaika.

Dear zine-fans, distributors and do-it-yourselfers,

we’re inviting you to the second annual Zinefest Berlin, taking place at the SFE Gneisenaustrasse 2a in  Kreuzberg on the weekend of november the 3rd to 4th.

Looking back at last years zinefest, we had a wonderful time with independent publishers and zine-creators from all over the world getting to know each other, sharing ideas and planning future projects together. Like last year, we want to give you the opportunity to sell your zines, participate in talks and workshops or even to hold one yourself.

Table Applications are CLOSED.
We have over 40 stalls!

If you only have one or two issues of your zine and don’t want to sell them yourself there’s no need to apply for a spot. You can leave it on the Individual Zine Table. Just tell us the price and how many copies you have and at the end of the day you can pick up the money you earned and any extra copies left. If you’d like to volunteer to help sell zines, please get in touch. Volunteers needed during the festival days. If you’re interested, we can tell you the date and place of our next meeting via e-mail.

You can contact us at zinefestberlin@gmail.com. There’s more information on our website, where you can subscribe to our newsletter and find some info about our last year’s event.

Thank you for reading this! We’re looking forward to hear from you,

“Wege is an astonishing album, created in part from two installation residencies in Austria and Brussels, for which Belfi developed a series of modular synth networks controlled by his percussion performances. A complex interwiring of mechanical and rhythmic devices that autonomously generated feedback and loop patterns whilst being restrained and guided by Belfi’s drumming.” Squealer magazine
