Concern + Matar Dolores + DuChamp (w/Filipe Dias De) @ The Zone Berlin! by DuChamp

La gioiosa macchina da guerra, Occultofest and Noisekölln are delight to present:

Concern + Matar Dolores + DuChamp (w/Filipe Dias De) @ The Zone Berlin

live Sun May 13th @ The Zone, Reuterstrasse 95 starting from 8.30 sharp!

Concern is the recording project of Portland-based Gordon Ashworth, who in a previous incarnation (as Oscillating Innards) delivered an altogether more brutal take on experimental music before planting his feet firmly in the world of shimmering, layered drones.  His brother, Owen Ashworth, works under the Casiotone for the Painfully Alone banner. Gorden has often worked with his sibling in that project. Under the Concern moniker, Ashworth “proceeds to completely obliterate the vast majority of what passes for contemporary drone with a colossal shimmer that sounds like Tim Hecker reconfiguring classic Raga structures into something almost unspeakably beautiful. Amazing music” (Boomkat). Full-lengths releases on Digitalis and Peasant Magik have acted to establish Concern as a key figure in the field of contemporary drone explorers.

Matar Dolores is a collaborative effort consisting of Francesco Tignola and Giuseppe Esposito, active in Naples, in the south of Italy. Their sound research is based on a massive use of field recordings in a strict compositional perspective and clever breaks of “music”; their gigs usually hit audience for depth and dynamism.  First official release, a c20 tape dedicated to philosopher Karl Polanyi, will see the light in early 2012 through the italian label Joy De Vivre.

DuChamp is an Italian scientist, musician and curator based in Berlin, religiousely devoted to drone. In her semi-improvised compositions, she uses accordion, baritone guitar, keyboard and voice. She performed here and there in Berlin, in Italy and Turkey. She´s currently working on her first solo album.  In this very unique occasion, she will perform a piece baritone/sitar with Filipe Dias De from Awe Processing Sitar

Filipe Dias De  is a founding-member of Altes Finanzamt, musician and writer. After graduating in economics in Lisbon, moved to Asia (i.e. India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia) where he lived from 2006 till 2008. There he learnt sitar (Indian classical music), various Gamelan instruments (Balinese music) and Gender Wayang (Balinese xylophone used for shadow puppetry). After moving to Berlin (mid 2008), Filipe started exploring sitar in the context of experimental improvised music, developing new melodic constructions and also using objects.

This year we will have a series of talks instead of a workshop, and there is a call for talks, we warmly invite all to submit ideas!

And, as always, a manifesto!

“Let it be a giant asteroid hitting the earth, the ultimate economical crisis, the third world war, the return of the big reptiles due to the Earth overheating, or a bunch of helicopters dropping napalm accompanied by Wagner’s The Ride of the Valkyries: Apocalypse is indeed not just a specialty number of religious fanatism and more or less articulated esoteric discourse. One or more of its possibile declination…continue reading

Animismus, the exibition + conference, and Orfeu Negro by DuChamp

[#] Open  Thu 15th the exibition Animismus, in Haus der Kulturen der Welt HKW! Aside of the exibition, there will be a conference!

“How do we distinguish things from beings? The exhibition “Animism” examines the delineation between life and non-life on the basis of aesthetic symptoms.

The scientific positivism of modernity was based on the categorical separation of nature and culture, of the subjective and objective world. Animism stood for the counter-image of this self-concept. It is at this juncture that the exhibition intervenes. With works by some 30 international artists, curator Anselm Franke transforms the Haus der Kulturen der Welt into a self-reflexive “anthropological museum of modernity”.

With works by: Adam Avikainen, Agentur/Agency, Anna und Bernhard Blume, Marcel Broodthaers, Didier Demorcy, Walt Disney, Jimmie Durham, León Ferrari, J.J. Grandville, Candida Höfer, Tom Holert, Ken Jacobs, Yayoi Kusama, Lars Laumann, Len Lye, Daria Martin, Angela Melitopoulos und Maurizio Lazzarato, Vincent Monnikendam, Istvan Orosz, Roee Rosen, Dierk Schmidt, Erik Steinbrecher, Paulo Tavares, Rosemarie Trockel, Martin Zillinger a.o.

[#] and tonight, in Mindpirates the screening of “Orfeu Negro”, a tale of love, loss, magic and music. Oh the music!

Winner of both the Academy Award for best foreign-language film and the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus (Orfeu negro) brings the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to the twentieth-century madness of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. With its eye-popping photography and ravishing, epochal soundtrack, Black Orpheus was an international cultural event, and it kicked off the bossa nova craze that set hi-fi across America spinning.
‘A riotous, rapturous explosion of sound and color’ – (The Washington Post).

In addition to John Cage, La Monte Young is among the most influential representatives of the American avant-garde. Unique musicians performing his concert cycle within Marian Zazeela’s light installation, Dream Light, at MaerzMusik is a minor sensation and may well be the final opportunity to experience these exceptional artists in Europe, as they stopped travelling ten years ago.
La Monte Young is considered to be the founder of minimal music, composing with sustained tones and expanded time concepts as early as the 1950s. He played jazz with Terry Jennings, concentrated on European and American avant-garde music, as well as Indian and Japanese music, and participated in the Fluxus movement.
In the 1960s, he began working onThe Well-Tuned Piano using just intonation, compositions with octaves, fifths and natural sevenths. Together with his wife, Marian Zazeela, he developed numerous sound-light installations and performances, among them the legendary Dream House, which appeared at the documenta in Kassel in 1972.
For two weeks, MaerzMusik will see the grand hall at Villa Elisabeth transformed into a »Dream House«. La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela invite you to spend time in a magical sound and light installation in which slowly changing drones and intensive magenta lights seem to stall time. On three evenings, La Monte Young will perform with The Just Alap Raga Ensemblewithin the installation, concert evenings that La Monte Young dedicates to his Indian music guru Pandit Pran Nath – a unique, sumptuous and sensual event.

Releasing a Special Edition Artist Book – Signed and Limited Edition at the Exhibition Opening!

HLG is the mononymous spiritual alias for Swedenís multifarious artist Martin Helge, currently residing in Berlin. His artistic expression is baptized in the name of Reversed Sami Magickal Dreamcatching and has many variables and personalities. It is a puzzle without words, a pyramid without angles and a crooked straight line. He is influenced by sublime alchemy, reversed psychology, abstract mental images, fluent semi-nomadic thoughts and subconscious force fields. Improvisation, rightful wrong-doing and mega productiveness , this is something he thrives on.

The power of thinking out loud and speaking without words; the equally electric and eclectic supernatural force of just being climactic and smart; the constant pushing and pulling of thinking about doing vs not doing is the strongest motivation behind his art.

He specializes in drawings, but sometimes he paints or prints. He also enjoys the mental bending of the Self that comes from free-form chaotic collaborations with other like minded artists, but simultaneously also seeks to fill all the negative space in space, as well as the holes in time, by closely intertwining his imagery with the darker aspects of the bright side of life in darkness.
